Now With 50% MORE Soccer!

So, Germany played Croatia yesterday. So sad. My Germans lost 1 - 2. Who knew that Croatia had such a good team? [Obligatory Arsenal mention alert!] One of Arsenal's most exciting players, Eduardo da Silva, should have been on the Croatian team. Unfortunately, he sustained an almost-career-ending injury back in February. At the time, they estimated that he would be out for 9 months. We didn't think we'd see him until October, November, or December of the coming season. But the latest news says we may see him earlier than that.

Anyhoo, Eduardo's got great spirit and is a really good little scorer. And yes, he is technically Brazilian. But if the German team can have two Polish players, why can't the Croatian team have a Brazilian? (Yeah, I still don't get how people decide which national team to play for 'cause there was another guy on the Croatian team who was born and raised in Australia.) In general, the Germans had a really frustrating game. The biggest problem in my mind was that the manager started the same lineup from the previous game. But there was one player in that mix who just played terribly in both games, Gomez. (Gomez, that's a good German name.) Germany finally scored after he was replaced, but it was too little, too late.

This doesn't mean that Germany's out of the tournament. But it means that they probably have to face Portugal next. That is a scary proposition for any team. The only good news is that Germany beat this same Portugal team at the World Cup to finish third. So, Portugal is not unbeatable.

Today, the Dutch take on France. I so hope that Thierry Henry is fit for the match. I can't take another lack-luster performance from France. Plus, Henry vs. Ruud? I've got chillbumps just thinking about how exciting this game can be!

Also on the schedule for today is Italy vs. Romania. How do you say "Kick Butt" in Romanian?

Adding Insult to Injury

The whole reason I began following Arsenal Football Club was because of Thierry Henry. I've already bemoaned the fact that he left the club to join FC Barcelona next season. But the latest news is just too much, really! My eye-candy is gone. Freddie Ljungberg, the pretty pretty bald Swede with the ice blue eyes and chiseled jaw who also just happens to be a Calvin Klein model, signed with West Ham for next season. There is one cutie left on the team, but he's, like, Poly's age, younger even....eww.

Who cares about fitness? Doesn't Wenger (the coach) know that you don't let hotness like this get away? Have a look-see for yourself:

If I Only Celebrated Christmas

I know what I'd be wishing for ... this.

Can you imagine walking into my house, coming up the stairs, rounding the corner and seeing a life-size (though flat) Thierry Henry kicking a ball at you? I'd yell "Offsides!" every time I came home. My neighbors might not find that as amusing as I do.

By the by, I got a shout-out on an English podcast today. They recap all the Premiership news from the weekend. To make their show interesting, they have fun titles for their various segments. They introduced a new segment last week which they asked their listeners to name. I sent in a couple of suggestions that I really liked. I got an email back from one of the podcasters (there are four guys on the show) indicating that he liked one of my suggestions. I was very eager to listen to the podcast today to see if I'd won the honour of naming the new segment. Nope.

The best I got was that one of the guys said my full name and declared that I was "fabulously named." So he liked *my* name better than the name I'd come up with for the segment. Then the one who sent me email, spoke up and said that he had really liked one of my suggestions but couldn't accept it because I support a rival club. Hooligan.

That leads me to a second tangent in this post... So many people seem to love my name. It is unique in the world. Evidently it is also melodic, mellifluous, sonorous and movie-star-ish. Or something like that. People also seem to like to say it in a funny accent.

That could lead me to a third tangent... The boys on "My Boys" do this funny thing where one of them will say a funny combination of words. He will stop in the middle of his sentence to repeat the interesting combination. He'll repeat it a few more times and then look at his friends and say, "Try it." Then they all start saying the funny phrase. That wasn't too funny the first time it happened, but it is a running gag that seems to get funnier each time they do it. It was especially funny when they started doing it in front of the girl's new "high class" boyfriend. She silenced them with a look and reminded them that they had promised to act normal.

OK. No more tangents. I'm done.
